About Aparna Sen:

Aparna Sen is one of prominent media personality in India. At the time of the late ’60s and mean the time of ’70s, Aparna Sen was a leading actress industry. From the front of the camera, she also worked at the back of the camera as a director. Aparna involved in journalism and raised voice in different social issues. Her work focused on the right and social concern regarding the woman.

Personal Life:

Chidananda Dasgupta and Supriya Dasgupta were Aparna Sen’s parents. Both of them were renowned in their own way of work. Chidananda Dasgupta was a prominent filmmaker, film critic, and film historian. Meanwhile, he was one of the major people who built the Kolkata Film Society. Supriya Dasgupta was a costume designer. Supriya received national award for costume designing. Furthermore, Supriya was a cousin of eminent Bengali poet Jibanananda Das. Originally they were from Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong. Later they moved into India. Aparna Sen was born on 25th October 1945 in Kolkata (Previously Calcutta at the of British East India Ruling period).

Aparna’s nickname was Rina. In the media industry, he is well known as Rina Di. Due to her parents, she found a cultural environment at the house. She passed her childhood at Hazaribagh and Kolkata. She completed A Level at Kolkata Modern High School for School. Aparna Sen started a BA in English at famous Presidency College. However, she did not complete that.

Marriage Life:

Aparna Sen married three times. His first husband was Sanjay Sen.  They married at an early age. Later, Aparna married to Mukul Sharma. Mukul was a journalist, science writer, and actor by passion. Now, Aparna Sen is married to Kalyan Ray. Mr. Kalyan is a professor of English at County College of Morris in Randolph, New Jersey, United States. Aparna Sen has two daughters. They are Kamalini and Konkona. Konkona Sen is also an established actress in the Indian film industry.

Career

 At the age of 15, Aparna Sen called for Teen Kanya movie during 1961 in the role of Mrinmoyee. It directed by legendary movie director Satyajit Ray. Satyajit Ray was a friend of Chidananda Dasgupta, father of Aparna Sen. She worked in numerous movies of Satyajit Ray in her career including Piku, Jonoaranno, Aarronor Dinratri, etc. Also, at the age of 15, she was covered by Life magazine. It was Monsoon series photography by Brian Brake.

In 1965, Aparna returns to the movie industry. Meanwhile, she took a break for study purpose. She returned with the movie “Akash Kushum”, directed by Mrinal Sen. Since then she became a regular face of Kolkata movie industry. However, she placed her footstep in both Hindi and English movie as well.

Aparna worked with all top actor and actress during her time including Uttam Kumar, Soumitra Chatterjee, Victor Bandyopadhyay, Amitav Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor, Sanjeev Kumar, and Rekha. Meanwhile, her chemistry with Soumitra Chatterjee in different movies received immense popularity.

Emerge as movie director:

After having a successful run as a movie actress, Aparna Sen emerged as a movie director. During 1981, her first directed movie released. The movie was 36 Chowringhee Lane. Following that she directed numerous popular movies after times.

Other activities:

Since 1986 she played the role of editor of Sananda, a Bengali women’s centric magazine. It was immensely popular in both Kolkata and Bangladesh. She worked there till 2005. Then from 2005, she worked as a creative director in an Indian TV channel till 2006. Meanwhile, she worked as an international jury in the Asia Pacific Screen Awards program. Apart from these, Aparna is very much active in social and political issues as well.
